Bizarre Happenings on the Rail Time!

Fumio did such a great job describing our 2 day trip July 18th and 19th on his Instagram Post, I decided to borrow his report.  Thanks Fumio!

"Fish report! 2-day on the Rail Time got into the best of both the current offshore and island scenes and with quality! A very fun, eventful, entertaining, and exciting trip with Jeff, Steve, Jan, Cathy, and Matt.

First day we had 10 bluefin tuna, with best four taping at 228# (Matt), 178# (me), 166# (Cathy), and 145# (Jeff). We left them biting at around 1pm to check out the island scene as we had more than enough tuna to take home.

Second day, we got into quality yellows at San Clemente Island up to 28#, plus two nice halibuts (Jeff and Matt), and a 25# chrome (Cathy, of course). We had an interesting little window (discovered by Steve), in which the yellows bit the fluke better than the live squid.

We also had an episode that none of us had seen before, including captain Gary and crew members Jake and Andy. The story goes like this: have you ever fought two tunas and a mako shark at the same time? Well, I have. As I was fighting the 178#, somehow a 60-70# class tuna got lassoed in the tail by the spectra. Then a mako shark grabbed that smaller tuna and tried to swim off with it. So, I was fighting all three at the same time at one point! I brought in both tunas, a limit on one line! Moments after landing the bigger one, a mako about 300# or so grabbed a flyer that Cathy was putting out and shot out into the air, doing a breath-taking somersault close to the boat. It did a second leap, but it all happened too fast, before I could turn my GoPro back on. It was a sight none of us will forget.

We also saw blue whales, turtles, and giant leaping molas - nature put on quite a show! Many thanks to everyone, especially charter master Jeff for the invitation!"

Steve said, "That was one of the most entertaining and memorable trips.  Thank you all!  When you fluke around, sometimes you do get lucky!"

And the trip residuals aren't too bad either!
