Kayak Tuesday 6-21-11

Tim, Jack, Wayne and I launched our kayaks and headed out of the harbor at 8 am yesterday. The water was a glassy 66.8 degrees and the air was close to the same, even though the skies were shrouded in a heavy cloud cover.

Tim and I had new GoPro Cameras to test out. Tim's camera was affixed to a pole and placed in a rod holder attached to his bait tank. Mine was loosely connected to my PFD so I could quickly grab it to take videos. As it turned out, Tim forgot to put the memory card in his GoPro so it was fortunate I had mine.

We peddled out to the headlands west of the red buoy and began fishing in 70 feet of water. On the way out, I caught a small mackerel and pinned it on my dropper loop. I fished 30 lb. Berkley Fluorocarbon and a Mustad 4/0 92677 hook. I also fished dead squid on the dropper loop. Wayne, Tim and Jack fished a combination of live sardines, mackerel and dead squid.

I tried casting a plastic swim bait and the Waxwing jig for a while with no success. At one point I saw the birds fire up over some porpoise and a school of bait. I peddled as fast as possible towards them but they moved out of range too quickly for me.

Fishing was horribly slow. A few bait snatchers was all I found. Apparently Jack and Wayne found the same. Tim was the star performer as he hooked two thresher sharks and due to fishing a steel leader, landed the second shark. This gave me the opportunity to test my GoPro to record Tim's catch.  Wayne captured the still photos (while I was playing with the video camera.)

Around noon the sun finally came out and although the fish refused to bite, it was a nice day on the water. We returned to dock around 1:30 pm to clean up our gear and put our kayaks away. In 5 1/2 hours of fishing I had traveled a total of 9 miles and taken 14 new videos on my GoPro.  Hopefully I’ll capture a video of one of my fish next time out.
